People assume a template pack starts in Canva. It does not. It starts with a problem. Here is the full behind-the-scenes look at how a pack goes from an idea to the download you buy.
It starts with a gap
Every pack begins with something I keep seeing creators struggle with, like messy story layouts, feeds that do not match, or launches that look thrown together. If enough people hit the same wall, that is a pack worth making.
The mood board
Before I design a single slide, I collect references: colors, type pairings, layouts I admire. This is where the personality of a pack is decided. I am looking for a feeling, not finished designs, whether that is bold and punchy, soft and editorial, or clean and minimal. The mood board becomes the rulebook for everything that follows.
Building the system, not the slides
Here is the part most people skip. I design the system first, meaning the color palette, the fonts, and the spacing rules, and only then start on individual templates. That is why a good pack feels cohesive. Every template is built from the same set of decisions, so they all belong together even when they look different.
Designing for the non-designer
This is the whole game. A template only works if someone with zero design experience can edit it and not break it. So I lock the layouts, leave generous space for text, and make the editable parts obvious. If I cannot customize it in a few clicks, neither can you, and it does not ship.
Testing like a customer
Before a pack goes live, I use it exactly like a buyer would: open the link, swap the content, export. If anything feels fiddly, I fix it. The bar is simple. If it would not make my own content better, it does not get released.
The final export
Once every template passes, I package the Canva links and previews, write the instructions, and it is ready for the shop. What took days to design should take you minutes to use. That is the trade, and it is the whole point.
